| INTERNET CONTENT The library will not censor access to materials nor protect users from offensive information. Individuals who are offended by material are advised to leave that particular site. Library staff may ask you to leave a site that does not appear to offer information resources. Parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding what library resources are appropriate for their own children. Parents or legal guardians should guide their children in use of the Internet and inform them about materials they should not use. PURPOSE OF THE COMPUTER The computer is to be used to enhance library research. Library computers will not be used for participation in chat rooms or interactive chat (IRC), accessing bulletin boards, or placing electronic orders. Playing games will not be allowed. ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS REMAIN IN EFFECT Examples include laws governing copyrights, gambling, and display of pornographic materials. Harassment is also illegal. Anyone breaking any law via the library's computer will be permanently disallowed from the library and may be subject to criminal prosecution. Patrons may not use the identity of the library to gain access to any services requiring a fee or to download software designated "for educational use only" for personal use. THE INTERNET COMPUTERS The library does not provide email, access to Usenet, FTP or bulletin boards. Individuals tampering with computer settings, changing or adding files to the computer, or otherwise sabotaging the library's equipment will be permanently disallowed from the library. COMPUTER USE Internet service will be available after 9:00am on weekdays. The computer may be used for one hour only. No additional time will be granted. No more than one hour per day will be allowed. Use of the computer will be on a first come first serve basis. Children 5 years and younger are not allowed to use the Internet computers. Children 8 years of age or under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Each page printed will cost ten cents. Patrons are limited to printing a maximum of 30 pages per day. The library will not provide diskettes. LIBRARY STAFF Library staff cannot provide in-depth training concerning Internet computer jargon or personal computer use. We may, however, be able to provide searching suggestions and answer questions. WIRELESS POLICY The Sequatchie County Public Library offers a free wireless Internet access point, or "hotspot," for users with portable computers capable of receiving wireless signals. This will allow adult users to access the Internet from their laptop computers when within range of the access point. Wireless access will be available only during normal library hours. The service will not be available when the library is closed. Printers are not available via the wireless connection. Users are expected to follow all the library's policies for acceptable computer use when using its wireless access. Users are responsible for making sure their computer has the correct settings and necessary hardware. Library staff cannot assist users in configuring their equipment or troubleshooting problems. Users should refer to their owner's manuals or other support services offered by their computer manufacturer. The library cannot guarantee a user's hardware will work with the library's wireless connection. As with most public wireless "hotspots," the library's wireless connection is not secure. Any information being sent or received can potentially be intercepted by another wireless user. The library will not be responsible for any data or personal information (e.g., credit card information) which may be compromised. The library will not be responsible for any software or hardware damage caused by such events as electrical surges, security breaches or other issues like viruses or hacking. All wireless users should have up-to-date virus protection on their wireless devices. Laptops and other devices should never be left unattended at the library, even for brief periods of time. The library assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, damage, or loss of any kind to the user's device, software, data, or any other personal property used at the library. Due to limited space, wireless users are asked to stay in the Quiet Room located in the Overton Johnson Conference Room, across the hall from the main library stacks and reception area. No conversations are allowed in this room. Patrons accessing audio files must furnish and use headphones. Failure to obey the quiet rule will result in the user losing wireless access privileges. Your device must be charged before using it in the library because electrical outlets may be used only with special permission from the library staff. Conduct will be consistent with normal library use. Disruptive and loud behavior will not be allowed. No more than two people will be allowed on the computer at one time. Violation of any of these policies may result in loss of computer privileges. The library reserves the right to implement additional administrative rules necessary from time to time for equitable computer use. |
